The Williams Syndrome
Foundation (WSF) was created at the direction of the
board of the
Williams Syndrome Association (WSA) to undertake
the major, complex, long range projects, such as
funding medical and educational undertakings, that were
either inappropriate or inconvenient for the parental
organization, the WSA, to pursue. The WSF has shared
officers with the WSA, and the organizations are linked
by a common purpose, complementing one another's
activities.
The WSA studied the creation of
the WSF and sought the experience and advice of other
organizations as to the most effective structure to
accomplish both day to day family information and
support long range goals. The consensus view was that
two organizations were a better choice and the WSA
board in 1988 set aside funds to organize and charter
the Foundation.
The Williams Syndrome
Foundation was incorporated under non-profit statutes
in the State of Texas in 1989 and received provisional
ruling of tax-exempt status from the IRS. In 1994,
after the required five year trial period, its tax
status under section 501 (c) (3) of the Code was
approved and continues in effect.
In 1998, the Williams Syndrome
Foundation authorized the
establishment of the
Berkshire Hills Music Academy, Inc.
