Drew Blight

Back Up Next

Well, our Drewbie (he’s 12), started Middle School this year (Grade 6).  The new school environment both excited him and made him nervous.  I was pretty anxious about the transition too, since structure and routine are so critical to Drew’s thriving and this new school environment is not only much more relaxed but kids are expected to take more responsibility for themselves on all levels.

The good news is that he has adjusted quite well so far!  He loves the cafeteria option (never having had it before!) and buys his lunch a couple times a week, he has many ‘buds’ that he “hangs with” at lunchtime- more than ever before since all the area kids are now in just one school at this level- he has taken up the Saxophone in music class which he happily lugs back and forth, he attends a ‘Mad Science’ workshop once a week after school and he is going to his FIRST DANCE this week!!! I don’t know who is more nervous- he or Mommy! Ha! He tells me there are so many pretty girls at school he doesn’t know which one to ask to dance!

All that being said, he does continue to have his struggles including not being able to navigate is locker combination lock, reading is at a Grade 3 level, printing is very strenuous for him etc… but he has a terrific teacher’s aide who helps him with his work- he thoroughly enjoys science, music and even gym this year (to my surprise)!  He uses a computer a lot and calculator to assist him with his work and has a modified program that still challenges him but accommodates his academic capabilities. He takes drum lessons on Saturdays and loves his swimming as well. He is also experiencing puberty and all the ‘attitude’ that comes with it which challenges us all at times! J

I guess I have realized with all my worrying and protectiveness, my little boy is growing up and although our special kids warrant more guidance and supervision than most, we must also as parents let go a bit and allow for more independence on their part-to make some of their own choices and decisions- and let them walk down their own path a step at a time albeit with us a few steps behind!

We live in New Brunswick, Canada-Drew (12), his sister Lexi (8), their Step-Father David (fondly referred to as their Extra Dad) and me, Marianne aka Mommy.  We can all be reached at marianne-n-david@rogers.com
