Malakai

Malakai Green malakai.gif (31890 bytes)was born at home, during a blizzard in Maine, on Christmas eve, 1997.  I can't express in words how much joy he brings me and everyone who encounters him. He was diagnosed at about 15 months old by our pediatrician,   and, with the results, came relief after about a year of guessing at what his delays might have been caused by.  His eating is progressing (he was in eating therapy even before diagnosis).  Grapes, bananas, crackers, and carrots are among his favorites.  He goes three days a week to a developmental program, in which he receives Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, and Speech Therapy -- all in a play environment.  He loves to spin and we work on boundaries with that.  His favorite instrument to play is the conga drum.  His sense of rhythm is amazing sometimes.  All instruments fascinate him.  With an extensive and growing vocabulary, he greets and engages anyone with ease and usually leaves them smiling.   It's not always easy though.  His temper has been increasing.  Sometimes resulting in biting and hitting, but we see progression always.  He is adjusting to his new baby sister, too, so we understand some of his frustration.

Malakai has slight pulmonary stenosis in which we are just "keeping an eye on" at this point.  He shows no signs of hyper-calcium now.  His teeth are small and stained a little, (we'll see how the adult teeth come in ) but after some texture therapy in his mouth, he actually asks to brush his teeth every night.   Malakai wears braces in his shoes which seem to help him balance better than without as well as help his muscles develop properly and to curb toe walking.  His hearing is very sensitive but he manages it well right now by covering his ears (as opposed to the screams when he was smaller).

Malakai has brought so much joy into my life and the people who he encounters.  I am blessed to have a child with Williams Syndrome.
