Jared Freeman wins Blue Ribbon for his speech at school's 4-H competition

Here is what Jared tells me (his mom) the speech was about.  As he did not plan his speech, there is really no telling what he actually said.  The following is what he remembers.  I know this is at least partially what he talked about.  Jared is 12 years old and in the 5th grade.  The speech was for a public speaking event for the school 4-H competition.  Jared won 1st place.

Topic - Bad people in the world

There are a lot of bad people in the world.  Terrorist are doing bad things.  Taking things that belong to others, and hurting people.  Just like Osama Bin Laden.  People are selling drugs.  Drugs are bad.  Police have to go after these people to stop them from selling drugs.  People don't need to be on the streets at night.  There are lots of homeless people.  They need homes so they won't be on the streets at night.  This is very dangerous.  There are bad people out looking to harm other people.

All of these bad people are why the Army and Military have to go all over the world to protect people.  They don't get to see their families and kids at night because they have to go to other countries where terrorist are trying to hurt people.  Police also have to be out at night and don't get to see their kids at night either.  Also, fire fighters have to help people when they get hurt.  A lot of policeman and fire fighters were killed in the World Trade Center.  That's why the Army and Military have to get the terrorist so they won't hurt more people.

When I am grown I am going to be a fire fighter so I can help people when they get hurt or have a fire at their house.  Always be careful with fire, and if you do have a fire at your house get out and call 911.  Be sure you remember to stop, drop and roll.  That's all, just don't be on the streets at night, and don't be friends with people, who sell drugs, they are bad.

Jared LOVES fire fighters, his life's obsession. He will ALWAYS manage to work them into a conversation.  (Notice how he managed to work them into a totally unrelated speech.)  We say around house that he can smell a fire fighter.  He picks them out at the beach, restaurants, doctors office's, you name it.  If there is a fire fighter there he will know it in a matter of minutes.  We have visited fire stations all over the south, including an  Airport fire station (these are usually off limits to visit) because Jared picks the fire fighters out of a crowd, introduces himself, usually amazes these guys with his knowledge of their jobs and nine times out of ten ends up with an invitation to visit their station.

Zachary, 6 1/2, was nominated by his kindergarten teacher's aide for Student-of-the-Month honors for grades K-4.  He was so cute when he went up on stage.   Half hidden by the podium, he thanked everyone for his award and walked off.   Zachary's proud parents are RJ and Holly Weston (NE Region WSA Director).

Joey Northridge Named to Junior High National Honor SocietyJoey Northridge II.gif (14370 bytes)

Interests/Sports
- In elementary school participated in Youth Soccer
- Currently is a 3 sport athlete, a member of the Junior High Cross Country,
Winter Track, and Spring Track teams.
- Very much into lifting weights and has extremely good muscle tone (which I
am told is often not the case with WS kids).
- Very active in church youth group and the church youth group musicals.
- Favorite shows are anything having to do with nature or history.
- Favorite instrument to play are the drums, but loves to listen to bagpipe
music as well (loves Scottish and Irish music).
- Very up-to-date on current events.
Academics
- Maintains an 'A' average in all mainstream classes. Maintains an 'A'
average in all other classes with just a small amount of academic support.
In most classes an academic support teacher writes his essay responses down
during tests as Joey does not yet have the motor skills to write fast
enough. A teacher's aid often helps him with notes in class as he can't
write them fast enough either.
- Works extremely hard on his homework out of school, often putting over an
hour in each night, and that is after sports' practices.
And the big news...
- Inducted into the Junior High National Honor Society on April 23rd.
- Named Junior High Student of the Month for the month of June and will be
honored at a breakfast held by the Rotary Club (the award sponsor) on May
22.
