FAQ: How Western Sports Foundation Supports Rodeo Athletes
Rodeo and western sports are unlike any other athletic industry. Rodeo athletes travel constantly, compete as independent contractors, and don’t have the same access to health insurance, retirement plans, or support systems that other professional athletes do.
That’s where Western Sports Foundation (WSF) comes in. Below, we answer the most common questions about who we are, who we serve, and how you can get involved.

Mental Health Support
Strong mental health is just as important as physical strength. WSF provides:
Crisis Care – Immediate support through our Crisis Manager, who connects athletes with resources for domestic challenges, substance abuse, and other urgent needs.
Counseling – Through our partnership with BetterHelp, athletes and their families have access to one-on-one counseling, group sessions, and self-guided tools to support everyday challenges.
Performance Coaching – Certified coaches help athletes overcome mental roadblocks, sharpen focus, and set achievable goals inside and outside the arena.
Financial Health
As independent contractors, rodeo athletes must manage their own finances. WSF helps with:
Financial Management – Guidance on budgeting, planning for the future, and understanding tax basics.
Financial Assistance – Support to help cover living or medical expenses when athletes are sidelined by injury.

Education and Career Development
Preparing for life after competition is a key part of our mission. WSF provides:
Scholarships – Funding opportunities for higher education, technical training, or certifications.
Learning Modules – Online and in-person workshops on topics such as personal branding, nutrition, injury prevention, recovery, career development, financial literacy, media training, and mental toughness.
Why do rodeo athletes need Western Sports Foundation?
Rodeo athletes are unique because they are independent contractors. Unlike athletes in other professional sports, they don’t receive guaranteed salaries, health insurance, or retirement benefits.
This creates challenges when it comes to health, finances, and planning for the future. Western Sports Foundation fills this gap by providing access to resources and support systems that athletes would not otherwise have.

Is my donation to Western Sports Foundation tax-deductible?
Yes. Western Sports Foundation is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit, which means all donations are tax-deductible as allowed by law.
